Chabo's in the Netherlands

The painting "The Poultry-yard" from 1660 by the famous seventeenth-century painter Jan Steen is the oldest reference known amongst Chabo lovers in the Netherlands. A Chabo(type) of the yellow-black tail colour is depicted on it .

There is some discussion whether the legs of this little cock are yellowish enough and, next to the green silver shine of the legs, also the crest suggest an earlier cross with the Dutch tufted chicken (of which, for that matter also some varieties appear in the painting), but undoubtedly the general appearance and the typical yellow-black tail colour give sufficient reasons to call this little cock a Chabo.  However, the image shows anyway the presence of  Chabo's in the Netherlands in those days. Merchants who commercially sailed to Asia have presumably taken around 1600 Chabo's to Holland.
